The 2018 Early Access game has become an indie game sensation, especially since its v1.0 launched on September 17, 2020. This pulse-pounding PC action game was also crowned Indie GOTY at the 2020 Game of the Year Awards -- talk about a huge win.
What Is Hades?
Hades is a roguelike action RPG where Greek mythology meets permadeath hack-and-slash. In this game, you are Zagreus, the defiant son of Hades, brother of Poseidon and Zeus, and the lord of the Underworld. Having no interest in someday ruling in hell, you choose to battle whomever and whatever you have to escape to Mount Olympus.

The Sights and Sounds of Hades
Hades is an immersive game that deserves praise for both its graphics and its audio. While there are a few similarities to Supergiant's first game, Bastion, the graphics in Hades are much better. Characters such as Dionysus, the god of wine and hedonism, the fury Megaera, and layabout Sisyphus look like something straight out of a Mike Mignola comic book. Additionally, note how many tens of thousands of words were recorded to bring the characters’ voices to life.

Experience Hades for Yourself
The gameplay in Hades is extremely exciting. For example, the challenges and enemies faced by a player are randomized. In Hades, combat has a fluid, fast-paced feel to it, similar to games like Curse of the Dead Gods.
Players will discover numerous chances to both strategize and frantically mash the buttons. The game’s controller is seamless which helps a lot. Initially, the player is allowed only one weapon per attempt to break free of the underworld.

More importantly, each weapon impacts the game. You will also come across different power-ups and enemies that will shake up the gameplay. Each chamber you enter is like a box of Crackerjacks.
Each one holds a special prize that will be yours once you have defeated your foe. While the game does not have an online multiplayer option, it does offer multiple paths. Planning, prioritizing and strategizing make up a huge part of the game.

You will encounter new enemies as you upgrade your abilities and powers, causing you to create new strategies. This adds even more variety and “newness” to the game. Battles can be welcomely unpredictable thanks to the regular introduction of new opponents that require new tactics to conquer.
A couple of the noteworthy tools include one that provides players with extra cash on each run. If you give others the nectar of the gods, you earn a special charm to aid you in your escape attempt. In Hades, you’re even allowed to spend your collected coins to decorate the palace or even buy your very own ferocious, three-headed Cerberus a fancy dog bed.

If you get frustrated, never fear. In the game, the story unwinds after each loss so you can catch your breath. Finally, if you have an exceptionally difficult moment, you can use God Mode to learn where the story is going.

Hades was crowned 2020's Indie Game of the Year, and deservedly so. The action RPG is without a doubt one of the best roguelike games of all time. Even in the Early Access days, Hades was meticulously crafted and perfectly balanced. The v1.0 launch and the updates that accompanied it only solidified the game's already impeccable achievements. With an immersive story, dynamic gameplay, and a stunning soundtrack, Hades will have players coming back for more.
